“Objects we call ours are an extension of our self-image. It is hardwired into our human nature to seek out connections, whether with people, animals, or objects. Sometimes we settle for low-maintenance relationships with objects and pets because they will always be there for us to project our emotions onto. These relationships won't hold us accountable due to their unchanging nature and their qualities of security and comfort.”

This phenomenon is called 'Anthropomorphism' where we attribute human traits, emotions or intentions onto non-human entities. It is why we sometimes name our cars.
